Excerpt: ... Towns.--Dornoch, the capital of Sutherland, the seat of a presbytery, and a small mean royal borough, containing 500 inhabitants, at the south-east extremity of the county, on the border of a frith of the same name, 9 miles north of Tain and 54-j from Inverness. The bishop's palace lies in ruins, a part of the cathedral is the present church, but no vestige of the red friars minster can be traced. The frith of Dornoch is navigable for coasting vessels above 20 miles from the sea, and for 6mall boats near 20 miles farther towards Loch Broom. To the southward of the town, about 10 miles west of Tain, is the round tower of Dun-Alishaig, anciently a sumptuous edifice. No part of the wall is now above 14 feet high. A rude upright stone at Cariblair is inscribed with symbolical characters resembling mathematical figures and a fish. Criechy a mean place, situate on the north coast of the frith of Dornoch. Near the bottom of this frith, at Invershin, is a fine cataract of the river Shin already mentioned. The district of Rogart, northward of Dornoch, consists principally of Strathfieet and Strathbrora, two indifferently fruitful vallies, lying from west to east, five miles distant from each other. The interjacent space is a group of rocky hills, with moss partially intervening. Some spots on the acclivities of the hills are cultivated, but it is rare to see three yards of ground without a rock. Golspie is a mean village in a level and fertile tract, extending from the sea 10 miles inland. Dunrobin, an ancient seat of the Earls of Sutherland, was founded about A. D. 1100, on a round hill, near the sea coast. In its vicinity is a Pictish castle called Cairn Lia, or grey tower, 130 yards in circuit, and forming a mount of considerable height, having on the summit an...

Excerpt: ... SOUTH AMERICA. South America is an immense peninsule lying between 12 N. and 54 S. latitude, and between 33£ and 82 W. longitude from Greenwich; being 4500 miles from north to south, and 3000 from west to east, in 5 S. latitude, whence its breadth gradually decreases to Gape Horn. The features of this country are peculiarly magnificent. Its mountains and rivers are much superior to those in the other divisions of the globe. The Andes, a stupendous ridge, extend from the Straits of Magellan northward to the Gulf of Darien, upwards of 4000 miles; and generally follow the windings of the western coast, at the distance of about 60--80 miles. The highest summits of that ridge are near the equator. Chimborazzo, or Chimborafo, composed of porphyry, and the most elevated part in that chain, about 100 miles south of Quito, is 20,280 feet above the level of the sea. That portion of it which is covered with perpetual snow is 2400 feet from its summit. The plain of Quito, which may be considered as the base of the Andes, is higher above the sea than the top of the Pyrenees. The next mountain in height is supposed to be the volcano called Catophaxi, computed at 18,600 feet, and about 25 miles south-east of Quito. Cayamburo a mountain of the first magnitude, lies about 11 leagues north-east of Quito. Other grand grand summits are Pitchincha, or Pinchincha, 15,500 feet, north-east of Quito; the Altar and Sanguay south-east of Chimborazzo. The greater part of the Sanguay is covered with snow. It is a continual volcano, attended with explosions heard at a great distance. In that part of the country there is a double chain, the interval being the plain of Ouito: and this form continues about 500 miles, viz. from the south of Cuanza to the north of Popayan. But farther...
