David & Charles Published date: 1978. Hard cover, 191 pp.Excerpts from front jacket flap This is the only book in English (except for an earlier book by the same author, now out of print( which gives a comprehensive account of Finnish architecture from the 12th century until today. Modern Finnish architecture is well known and justly admired, but too little attention has been paid to the buildings of the past in spite of their remarkable quality; notably the medieval village churches ... the neo-classical public buildings of the early 19th century and the buildings of the National Romantic movement of around 1900, when Finland made a unique contirbution to European architecture. Richards. illustrates the story with over 200 photographs of buildings in all parts of Finland and with plans and other line drawings. They cover the whole span of Finnish architecture, from the earliest fortresses to the buildings of the celebrated modern master Alva Aalto and those of the contemporary architects who, together with Aalot, have made Finland a place of pilgrimage for all who are interested in the progress of architecture today.
