Studied law father’s office. Admitted to bar, 1860. Infantry officer and afterward artillery officer, 1861-1865, C.S.A.

Resumed practice after war. President Charleston (South Carolina.) News and Courier Company, since 1894.

Member South Carolina. House of Representatives, 1878-1891 (speaker 1882-1890).
