The collection of coins and medals at the National Mint was formally commenced in June, 1838; but for many years previously to that time master coins of the Mint, that is to say, fine specimen pieces struck from new and polished dies, had been preserved, and also specimens of foreign coins, which were received as deposits, were withheld from the melting-pot, to be used, in the event of the establishment of a conservatory, at a future day.
