Appointed to the Indian Civil Service after examination of 18(59. Arrived 1871, and served in Madras Presidency as Assistant Collector and Magistrate, 1872. Head Assistant Collector and Magistrate, 1882.
Sub - Collector, Joint-Magistrate, and Principal Assistant, Godavari, 18S5.
Collector and Magistrate, 1889. Resident, Travancore and Cochin, 1895.
Member of the Board of Revenue and Commissioner of Separate Revenue, 1897. Additional member of the Legislative Council of Fort Saint George, 1898.
Member of the Executive Council, 1901-1905, and acting Governor, 1904, in the absence of the Viceroy. Indian Civil Service, member of Council of India since 1908.
