"For some years I have been afflicted with the belief that flight is possible to man. My disease has increased in severity and I feel that it will soon cost me an increased amount of money if not my life." So wrote a quiet young Ohioan in 1900, one in an ancient line of men who had wanted to fly - men who wanted it passionately, fecklessly, hopelessly. But now, at the turn of the twentieth century, Wilbur Wright and a scattered handful of other adventurers conceived a conviction that the dream lay at last within reach, and in a headlong race across ten years and two continents, they competed to conquer the air.

James Tobin was born in the United States.
James received a Ph.D. in history from the University of Michigan.
James served as a journalist, reporting for the Detroit News from 1986 to 2003.
Tobin's first book was Ernie Pyle’s War: America's Eyewitness to World War II, published in 1997. In this book, James documented the professional and personal life of Ernie Pyle, a journalist who became the most famous war correspondent of World War II. His next book was To Conquer the Air: The Wright Brothers and the Great Race for Flight, published in 2003.
Tobin's newest and highly acclaimed book, The Man He Became: How FDR Defied Polio to Win the Presidency, came out in 2013. In this thoroughly researched history, Tobin does more than just revisit the seemingly well-known story of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s struggle with polio. He intimately draws the reader inside Roosevelt’s life from the tragic day in 1921 when he suddenly couldn’t stand up to his ultimate journey to the White House.
