He was elected to the Faculty of Advocates in 1738. He was appointed a sheriff in 1747, at Peebles. He died at Street Andrew Square, Edinburgh, on 1 July 1793.

He served as Member of Parliament for Dumfriesshire (1755-1760), as a Senator of the College of Justice (1761-1793), as Commissioner for Forfeited Estates (1769), as Deputy Governor of the Royal Bank of Scotland (since 1776), and as a member of the Board of Trustees for Manufactures & Fisheries (since 1777).
