Born in Edinburgh on 25 September 1712, the son of William Veitch of Elliock WS (died 1747), he was educated at Edinburgh University, Leyden University and Halle University.

Career
He was elected to the Faculty of Advocates in 1738. He was appointed a sheriff in 1747, at Peebles. He died at Street Andrew Square, Edinburgh, on 1 July 1793.

He served as Member of Parliament for Dumfriesshire (1755-1760), as a Senator of the College of Justice (1761-1793), as Commissioner for Forfeited Estates (1769), as Deputy Governor of the Royal Bank of Scotland (since 1776), and as a member of the Board of Trustees for Manufactures & Fisheries (since 1777).
