Wardrope received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1975. Three years later he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the same university.
Career
Wardrope began his career as a senior house officer at Victoria Hospital in 1980. Two years later he was appointed a registrar at Leeds General Infirmary. Then in 1984, James became a senior registrar at Royal Hallamshire Hospital. In 1987 he was appointed a consultant in accident and emergency medicine at Northern General Hospital.
