James began his career in Educational Research Service in Arlington, as a research associate in 1985. He later began as research associate in Council of Chief State School Offices, Washington, D.C., and became senior research associate.
In 1987 he started working at Niagara University. He began as an assistant professor, and finaly became a professor of communication studies. In 1994 he became a chairperson of department there.
In 1986 James wrote Class Size Research: A Related Cluster Analysis for Decision-Making. In 1998 appeared Watching M*A*S*H, Watching America: A Social History of the 1972-1873 Television Series. The book demonstrates that the ‘progressive’ orientation of M*A*S*H is preceded by protest and changes in the larger socio-political milieu. The time of M*A*S*H was an unprecedented time of political change in American society from the Vietnam era to the early Reagan years.
He was also a contributor to periodicals, including Political Communication, Canadian Journal of Communication, Political Communication and Persuasion, etc.
