James E. Wolfe was born in 1820.
Mr. Wolfe arrived in San Francisco in 1851. He was given a thorough education in architecture, and opened an office for practice in 1860. Two years later he was joined in partnership with a son, C. E. Wolfe, and in their work designed and built various buildings in the Bay area, among them the Eclectic College in Oakland. During later years he gave up practice to become editor and publisher of the quarterly magazine, first published in San Francisco in 1877, later renamed the California Architect and Building News.
