However, most of his career was as a civil servant. He was an extra clerk of the Her Majesty"s Most Honourable Privy Council from 1697, becoming one of the Clerk of the Privy Council in 1715, a post he held for the rest of his life. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in May 1702.
