Studied at National Schools, and Newcastle Grammar School.
After leaving school learnt printing. Acquired knowledge of shorthand. Became newspaper reporter.
Joined Sydney Evening News staff, 1875. SubEditor live years, Editor ten years. Minister of Public Instruction and Labour, 1898-1899.
Colonial Secretary, 1904-1907. M.L.A., Glebe, since 1894; Minister of Public Instruction and Minister for Labour and Industry in the Government of New South Wales since 1907.
