Enlisted, July 1861, 4th Iowa infantry. Commissioned First lieutenant and adjunct. Promoted Lieutenant col March 9, 1862, colonel March 18, 1862.

Later brigadier general and still later brevetted major general Medal of honor for gallantry in action Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi, December 29, 1862. Commissioner General Land Office United States, 1876-1881. Then land commissioner and general solicitor Atlantic & Pacific Railroad Company, of which he later was president until road was sold to Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe R.R. Republican.
