Admitted to bar, 1881, and began practice at Chattanooga, Tennessee Presidential elector-at-large, 1900 and 1920. Governor of Tennessee, terms, 1902-1904, 1904-1906. Elected United States senator, March 21, 1905, to fill unexpired term (1905-1911) of William B. Bate, and resigned as governor, March 27, 1905.
Married Louise Douglas Keith, January 10, 1883. Children: Annie Keith (Mistress R. N. Somerville), James B., Thomas A., Louise Douglas (Mistress John P. Fort).
