Ames, James Barr was born on June 22, 1846 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Samuel T. and Mary H. (Barr) Ames.

Education

Graduated from Harvard, 1868 (A.M., 1871). Harvard Law School, 1872 (Doctor of Laws, University City of New York, University of Wisconsin, 1898, University of Pennsylvania, 1899, Northwestern, 1903, Williams, Harvard, 1904).

Career

At least 2 children. Taught in private school, Boston, 1868-1869. Tutor in French and German, Harvard, 1871-1872, instructor in history, 1872-1873, associate professor of law, 1873-1877, professor of law, from 1877. Dean Harvard Law School, from 1895.

A founder Harvard Law Review, 1887. Compiled collections of cases on torts, pleading, bills and notes, partnership, trusts, suretyship, admiralty and equity jurisdiction. Author works on legal subjects including Lectures on Legal History and Miscellaneous Legal Essays, published posthumously, 1913.
