(Although the psychology of religion is still exceedingly ...)
Although the psychology of religion is still exceedingly young, much valuable work has already been done on several aspects of the religious consciousness, such as conversion, mysticism, certain abnormal phenomena, etc.; but the important question of religious belief, from the psychological point of view, has received but scant attention. To help break ground in tbis rich but rather neglected field is the aim of the present work. It does not concern itself with the nature or the definition of religion, a question that has resulted in so much smoke and so little light, but is limited to the much more modest and concrete problem of the nature of belief in aG od or gods and the basis or bases on which this belief really rests. In order to attain a comprehensive view of this subject, I have not confined myself to psychology, but have made what use I could of the results of anthropology and the history of religion. How far I have succeeded in combining these rather diverse fields, so that they might lend each other mutual assistance in throwing light on our question, must be left to the reader to determine. My aim has been to write for both the technical and the general reader; in fact, respecting many .,l,:. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Finding pragmatism inadequate, his trenchant criticisms turning on its future directedness and the instrumental status accorded by it to reason, and finding idealism less probable than realism, Pratt made common cause with the critical realists. At the end of his 1920 essay, however. Pratt pointed out that inference requires a recognition of ‘the act of transcendence’, which one takes on faith, and it is this which takes one beyond solipsism to a real world. The recognition of transcendence led him. in a course of thought extending from his initial publication on psychology of religion through Matter and Spirit and Personal Realism, into his extended analyses of the religions of India. Initially inspired by the religious writings of William James, and deepened by two sabbatical years spent in India, the books emerging from this endeavour were, as he said, his most extensive, and ‘the undertone of the Upanishads has.. never been long out of hearing’.
