James Ridgeway (b. 1936) is an investigative reporter. In 1965, James Ridgeway helped launch the modern muckraking era by revealing that General Motors had hired private eyes to spy on an obscure consumer advocate named Ralph Nader. He worked for many years at the Village Voice, has written 16 books, and has codirected Blood in the Face, a film about the far right. In 2012, he was named a Soros Justice Media Fellow. Ridgeway began his career as a contributor to The New Republic, Ramparts, and The Wall Street Journal. Later, he was co-founder and editor of the political newsletters Mayday, Hard Times and The Elements. "Who Owns the Earth?" has more than 50 overviews on the production and consumption of specific commodities. The role of multinationals, Third World and industrialized countries is included. A variety of commodities are covered including: foods, cocoa, coffee, tobacco, marijuana, oil, natural gas, diamonds, blood, and fetuses. It is an eye-opener as are all Ridgeway's works.
