Green, James Gilchrist was born on June 27, 1841 in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Matthews W. and Margaret Augusta Green.

Educated N.H. and Massachusetts.

Career

Entered United States Navy, volunteer service, as acting ensign, May 1861. Transferred to regular navy at end of Civil war. Commissioned lieutenant commander July 3, 1870.

Commander, March 1887. Captain March 3, 1900. Commandant Puget Sound Station, 1898-1900.

Retired May 11, 1901, as rear admiral, upon own request, after 40 years service. Was commandant Havana, Cuba, Naval Station, 1900. Commanded United States Ship New Orleans, 1900-1901.
