This book contains a selection of the information and material presented in the 1952 program titled, "Welded Highway Bridge Design". The manner of the selection was based on the desire to include a maximun amount of the valuable ideas of the designs submitted in this program. This program was started at a time when the supply of steel was considerably less than the demand and when the conservation of stell was of great national importance. The program placed emphasis upon the saving of steel-also upon low cost. This emphasis in steel conservation is reflected by the designs which show a comparison between riveted and welded designs.
