James H. Amos Jr. first wrote Focus or Failure: America at the Crossroads -- Where Are You? as an attempt to articulate what he thought was happening in America and what some of the possible courses of action you and I might take to address these issues. The mission of this book: To re-awaken America to the heritage we all share. To cherish excellence and celebrate people who won't give up. To value moral triumph more than material success. And, to recognize that even in the worst circumstances we retain a freedom to control our attitudes toward our circumstances.

(This is not a religious book...anymore than "forgiveness"...)
This is not a religious book...anymore than "forgiveness" or "values" or "love" are exclusively religious terms. This is a book about fundamentals and basics. Focal points. There are twelve chapters or fundamentals to master that I believe can help transform the heart of Americans and America. Each fundamental will have within it other recommended reading and reference material as an aid to ongoing mastery. I hope you find this work enjoyable and valuable but I hasten to point out this is not a game, but a way of changing the moral climate and effectiveness of our country. Things do matter. Often life feels like it is a game being played by men and women who excel at gamesmanship. "Our life in this country, the sacrifices that have been made for this country, the lives that have been given to this country, are not a game. My parents' lives were not a game."' And as my friend Charlie "Tremendous" Jones is fond of saying, "You are the message." Power has never made America or American business great. Goodness and virtue have. "All around me is the sound of moral decay. I hear the sound of America crying. And it is no game."

(There is an ancient Chinese imprecation that states, “I c...)
There is an ancient Chinese imprecation that states, “I curse you to live in an important age.” William Butler Yeats, in his often repeated poem, “The Second Coming”, a poem of the world disintegrating, wrote “the ceremony of innocence is drowned, the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.” Since 9/11/01, in America one would be hard pressed to argue with that analysis. If the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 threw enormous light on the 20th century, it can surely be said that 9/11/01 threw a new light on the 21st century that appears to be bearing fruit all over the world today. There is something monumental happening in the world today. The cacophony of sound bites shrouds a persistent, pervasive and irrevocable feeling of uncertainty and despair that seems to be enveloping the globe. The United States, it appeared, had buried its mortal enemy. The death of both an idea and an empire, Communism and the Soviet Union, had kept millions of baby boomers vacillating between fear and hate for fifty years. The world paused long enough to observe that the largest number of free countries in history could now be listed statistically and American culture was taking root around the globe. Some people even began to talk of Pax Americana, a new age of American business and peace. In a recent blog (see jimamosblog.com), I wrote about the events taking place in the Gaza strip that are continuing as I write these words. Pointing out that in 1991 Samuel Huntington posited the question, “if the American model no longer embodied strength and success and no longer seemed to be the winning model, what would happen?” The cold war is won? Democracy and free speech and capitalism have ascended and the day of the dictator is over?
