James studied at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. In 1992 he became a Bachelor of Music. In two years he became a Master of Music. In 1998 he was a student of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, United States. He received a degree of the Doctor of Museum Arts.
James worked as a visiting assistant professor at the Sweet Briar College in Virginia, United States from 1998 to 1999. In this year he was a director of keyboard studies of the George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, United States. He worked there for three years. Since 2003 he was an assistant professor of piano at the Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, United States.
