Owned half of “Hopeton” (a Georgia rice plantation), also rice plantation on Cannon’s Point, St. Simon’s Island, Georgia. Supervised over 1800 slaves. 1st American to operate rice plantation scientifically, using diking and drainage system.
Built 1st cotton-seed oil mill in the United States, Natchez, Mississippi, 1834. One of 1st to grow Bermuda grass and olives in the United States. Plantations and fortune destroyed in Civil War.
Children include Hamilton, John.
