Oliver, James Harrison was born on January 15, 1857 in Houston Company, Georgia, United States. Son of Thaddeus and Sarah Penelope (Lawson) Oliver.

Education

Washington and Lee University, 1872. Graduated from the United States Naval Academy, 1877.

Career

Ensign, 1881; promoted through grades to rear admiral, January 5, 1917. Made 9 cruises at sea, averaging a little over 2½ years each. Station duty at Fort Monroe, Providence, Newport, Rhode Island, Cincinnati.

Director Naval Intelligence Office, January 20, 1914. Governor Virgin Islands and commandant Naval Station, 1917-1919. Duty Navy Department, April 1919-January 1921 (retired.).
