Enlisted April 15, 1861, in first infantry company raised in Chicago. Served in General Swift’s expedition to Cairo, Illinois, April 17-May 6, 1861. Mustered into Company Doctorate, 19th Illinois Infantry, June 17, 1861, for 3 years.
Served in Army of the Cumberland.
Taken prisoner after being wounded at battle of Stone River, December 31, 1862, and kept in Libby Prison several months in various battles and many engagements. Mustered out July 9, 1864.
After war reporter on Chicago newspaper. Foreign editor New York Times, 1875-1877.
Went to Paris, 1877, as special correspondent American newspapers (principally Boston Herald, San Francisco Chronicle, and New Orleans Picayune).
Returned to the United States, 1895. Traveling correspondent Boston Herald in the United States for some time. Devoted entire time to literature work, since 1898.
Married Mary Huguenin Bright, December 19, 1893.
