Bachelor of Arts, Harvard, 1857, studied Harvard Law School, 1 year.
Admitted to bar, 1860. Specialist in patent law, gained fame in legal circles in Lawrence versus Pana copyright case of 1869. Counsel (with Chauncey Smith) Bell Telephone Сompany in patent litigation, 1878-1896.
Went to Caracas to help in Venezuela boundary question, 1896, went again in 1897 to submit protocol for arbitration treaty agreed upon by Britain and Venezuela, instrumental in persuading British to submit dispute to arbitration.
