Joined King’s Royal Rifles, 1885. Served in Chin Hills, Burma (medal and clasp). Attached Egyptian Army, 1894-1899, and served as Aide-de-camp to the Sirdar during Dongola and Khartoum expeditions (despatches, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, Brevet Majority, 4th Class Medjidieli and 3rd Class Osmanieh).
Served South Africa as Aide-de-camp to Lord Kitchener, 1901 (despatches, Companion of St. Michael and St. George). Returned to Egyptian Army, 1901. Retired 1905. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1896; late King’s 2115 Royal Rifles; 1st Aide-de-camp to The Khedive since 1905.
