Mr. Aspinwall was educated in New York, United States. He began architectural training at an early age under Professor L. Colian, French architect and engineer in the city.
In 1875 James obtained a position as draftsman in the office of James Renwick, noted church architect in New York. Four years later he was taken into partnership, and during his long association with Mr. Renwick collaborated on the plans of a number of important buildings, one of which was Mr. Renwick's masterpiece, St. Patrick's Church on Fifth Avenue. He also had much to do with the additions and alterations to Grace Church, which were completed after the elder architect's death. Other buildings with which Mr. Aspinwall was identified were the American Express Company Building in New York, the Public Library at Springfield, Mass., and a number of fine residences, notably of town and country type or design. A long-time member of the A.I.A. he was raised to Fellowship in 1914.
