BioStats Basics provides introductory-level biology students with a practical and accessible introduction to statistical research. Engaging and informal, the book avoids excessive theoretical and mathematical detail to focus on how core statistical methods are put to work in biology. Students learn the essentials in probability that enable skillful experiment design and the correct use of statistical tests. Everyday examples, are drawn from ecology, animal physiology, animal behavior, medicine, and other areas of biology, are used the clarify methods. The accompanying Web site, www.whfreeman.com/gould is closely integrated with the text, providing crucial tutorials (explanations of tests alongside simulations) plus data analysis tools for completing the text’s exercises.

Ethology is the study of the mechanisms and evolution of behavior. Now more than ever before ethology poses some of the most exciting intellectual challenges in modern biology while it offers the most powerful conceptual tools for answering them. The goal of this book is to illustrate the power of ethology's broad and integrative approach in unraveling how behavior, both simple and complex, is organized and orchestrated. The book develops this theme by looking first at traditional ethology to establish familiarity with the models which will then be used to examine neural mechanisms, social behavior and species interactions, and finally our own species. Suggested readings at the end of each chapter serve to broaden the book's base with examples of first-rate research treated in far more detail than would be possible in text. Where such concise, semitechnical supplements are not available, short essays devoted to particular experiments or approaches a company the text. Study questions at the end of each chapter are designed to stimulate creative thinking about the chapter's subject, and rarely have an obvious or even uniquely correct answer. Students wishing to delve deeper into the literature surrounding a particular subject may make use of the chapter-by-chapter selected bibliography at the end.

( Animal behavior has long been a battleground between th...)
Animal behavior has long been a battleground between the competing claims of nature and nurture, with the possible role of cognition in behavior as a recent addition to this debate. There is an untapped trove of behavioral data that can tell us a great deal about how the animals draw from these neural strategies: The structures animals build provide a superb window on the workings of the animal mind. Animal Architects examines animal architecture across a range of species, from those whose blueprints are largely innate (such as spiders and their webs) to those whose challenging structures seem to require intellectual insight, planning, and even aesthetics (such as bowerbirds’ nests, or beavers’ dams). Beginning with instinct and the simple homes of solitary insects, James and Carol Gould move on to conditioning; the cognitive map” and how it evolved; and the role of planning and insight. Finally, they reflect on what animal building tells us about the nature of human intelligence-showing why humans, unlike many animals, need to build castles in the air.

Green Herons toss breadcrumbs into the water to attract fish - have they been watching human anglers? Do they "know" what they are doing? Termites cut air shafts into their nests - do they understand? This suggests a sophisticated planning ability. In this book, the Goulds examine the evidence of the mental capacities of animals, moving from primary perceptual processing to what are usually considered the most advanced forms of thought and language, with a final chapter on that animal we see in the mirror every day. Throughout the book, the Goulds challenge basic assumptions about animal cognition and ask "are animals capable of thought and awareness"?

biologist university professor author
Gould, James L. was born on July 31, 1945 in Tulsa. Son of James L. and Doris Mae Gould.
Bachelor of Science, California Institute of Technology, 1970. Doctor of Philosophy, Rockefeller University, 1975.
He has served as a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University since receiving his Doctor of Philosophy in 1975 However, he is primarily known for the experiment he designed while an undergraduate at Caltech which proved that bees use complex dances to communicate the location of food. Gould went on to do work that further specialized in communication in Southern Right Whales. He also published studies that made serious contributions to the ethological understanding of animal navigation and sexual selection.
During his long lasting career at Princeton, Gould has been dedicated to teaching as well as research.
Notably, he has been teaching introductory biology and animal behavior courses for several decades. He has also taught field courses in marine biology.
His dedication and enthusiasm for teaching have made his courses very popular.
