Moses Waddell (1770-1840), brother-in-law and teacher of John C. Calhoun, is considered one of the most famous and successful educators in Southern History. He was fifth President of the University of Georgia and was credited with saving the college during a crucial period in its history. Earlier in his career, he also formed the Willington Academy in South Carolina where an unusual number of leaders were produced. (Biographies of these are in the back of the book.) Waddell had an orthodox mind but he was innovative in some of his teachings methods. One answer he did not have to give to answer the teaching problems of his time, since he ran a "log cabin" academy, was to throw money at the problems and think they might go away. He had firm discipline combined with innovative teaching methods. He also taught values and virtues. His 'log cabin school" in the rural South was looked up to nationally as a "light in the wilderness." The irony of Waddell's example for us today is that he accomplished in definite poverty what we in comparative plenty (the richest country on earth) often cannot and do not do in educating the young in solid academic learning, good values, needed virtues, motivating the right ambitions, nearly all forms of leardership, and common sense. It should be noted at Willington everything was of the "cheapest, roughest, plainest kind." This suggests that in educating the young Waddell knew some priorities that today it seems we widely lack or have lost.
