Has practiced law, since 1871. Member Assembly, 1879-1880. Republican candidate for attorney general New York, 1889.

Permanent chairman Republican State Convention, 1891. Republican and Anti-Tammany Democratic candidate for judge Superior Court, 1890. Senior aide-de-camp to Governor Cornell, 1880-1883, with rank of colonel.

Appointed by Governor Morton, 1895, paymaster general New York with rang of brigadier general. Appointed by Governor Roosevelt, 1899, surrogate Company of New York. Vice president Society of the Cincinnati in Rhode Island.
