Background

Tracy, James Madison was born on January 27, 1837 in Bath, New Hampshire, United States. Son of Luther and Mary Clough Roe (Dimond) Tracy.

Education

Education high school, Concord, N.H. Studied music with Carl Hauser, L. H. Southard, of Boston, at Leipzig Conservatory, 1858-1860, and pupil of Liszt, at Weimar, 1860-1861. Honorary Master of Arts, Dartmouth, 1871.

Career

Teacher of piano, theory and harmony, Boston Music school and Boston Conservatory, 1868-1884. Successively with Livingston Park Seminary, Mistress Eaton’s Select School for Girls, Miss Tracy’s Boarding School for Young Ladies (Rochester, New York), Highland Park Normal College (Des Moines), Des Moines Conservatory of Music, etc. Founder, 1900, and director Liszt School of Music, Denver, Colorado Author: Three Years of Student Life in Germany, 1872.

James M. Tracy’s Theory and Rudimental Harmony, 1878. Also (musical novels) Manton Lee, 1890. George Monroe, 1894. Compiler: Boston Conservatory Method.
