Urmson has written influentially in many areas of philosophy. Philosophical Analysis (1956) became a standard account of British analytical philosophy between the two World Wars. His Emotive Theory of Ethics (1968) criticized and developed the emotivism of C. L. Stevenson, using in part distinctions derived from Austin. His introduction to Aristotle’s ethics helped consolidate the place of Aristotle in contemporary ethical studies. He has also produced influential work in aesthetics.
