Early work concentrated on life-cycle models of decision-making, including decisions of families to work, invest and consume. From this research, I developed an interest in estimation issues concerning female labour supply, which would eventually culminate in a book of essays dealing with the changing economic position of blacks and women in America. While the early research concentrated on 1960 trends, more recently my interest has moved to a more historical approach spanning periods of over 100 years.
My most recent research interest has centred on labour markets in developing countries, and in particular the transformation of these markets as the development process proceeds.
