An organizer, head Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Greenville, 1859-1861, closed seminary at outbreak of Civil War, reopened seminary at Louisville, Kentucky, after war.
Served as chaplain of a South Carolina. regiment during Civil War.
Spent last years of life in Europe because of poor health.
