Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

Much of the work of James Rendel Harris (1852-1941), palaeographer and biblical scholar, focused on the translation and understanding of early Christian writing, and this collection of two volumes of essays examines two key texts. The first work in this reissue, published in 1896, discusses the book known as 'The Shepherd of Hermas'. This early work, thought to be written in Rome around the first or second century CE, is composed of three parts: visions, commandments and similitudes. Harris examines aspects of the work, such as how to interpret the ninth similitude - as allegory or literally - and discusses in detail questions about translation. Themes of other essays include the legendary library of Prester John in Abyssinia, the third-century writer Gaius the Presbyter and problems surrounding the fourth-century Codex Euthalianus. The second work, published in 1889, is concerned with the apocalyptic language in the book of Baruch.

(Excerpt from The Rest of the Words of Baruch: A Christian...)
Excerpt from The Rest of the Words of Baruch: A Christian Apocalypse of the Year 136 A. D The present work is designed to draw attention to an important but hitherto much-neglected fragment of Apocalyptic literature which seems to me to be valuable, in spite of the contemptuous treatment which it has met with at the hands of the critics, both to the Ecclesiastical Historian and to the Christian Dogmatist; to the former, on account of the light which it throws on one of the most obscure periods in the growth of the Church, that, viz., which includes the revolt of the false Messiah; to the latter, because it helps us to see the manner in which one of the leading doctrines of the Christian Faith polarized the worshippers for and against itself (as almost every point of Christian doctrine does at some time or other in the history of the Church), and setting a man at variance spiritually with his fellow brought it to pass that the sword came down in the house itself to separate the undecided and half-hearted from the convinced and the faithful, that the many who were called might make way for the few who were chosen. And certainly when we say that in this tract the reader will hear the final farewell of the Church to the Synagogue, and that the parting words will be concerned with the doctrine of the Divine Nature of Jesus Christ, we have a right to ask for it a closer and a more careful perusal than it has hitherto met with. Nor is this the only reason why it should be made an object of attentive study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Nor is this the only reason why it should be made an object of attentive study. We hear much said now-a-days about the interpolation of Jewish Apocalypses by Christians, and it becomes a very interesting matter for critical study to determine how far such a tendency to the absorption and republication of earlier literary productions prevailed in those centuries which were especially marked by Apocalyptic activity, and in what manner that republication was commonly effected: for it is certain that in the early Christian literature (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

Not illustrated. 1890 Excerpt: ...if we may so express it, for the vision which Perpetua saw. The way in which Tertullian works out the figure of the athletic contest in which the martyrs are engaged is very remarkable, because it runs parallel in some points with Perpetua's wrestling match with the Egyptian. It is true that the illustration is a sufficiently common one, and therefore coincidences are not to be pressed as they are in the previous illustration; but at all events let us look at them. According to our Acts, then, the last vision of Perpetua is a vision of her wrestling with the devil under the form of an Egyptian. A most beautiful youth attended by a band of beautiful companions appears as her trainer. Presently there enters a man of marvellous height, robed in purple of more than ordinary dignity, and holding the judge's staff in his hand. The Latin version, not seeing the necessity apparently both for the youth of amazing beauty and the judge of amazing stature, has left out the former, furnishing thus only a bevy of young men for backers of the athlete. But one suspects that both God and Christ are represented in the vision: God the judge of all and Christ the trainer of the faithful. And when we turn to Tertullian we find as follows: "ye are about to undergo a good fight wherein the president is the Living God: the trainer, the Holy Spirit: the crown, eternity: the prize, of angelic being, the citizenship of the Heavens: the glory, for ever and ever. Wherefore your Master Christ Jesus, who hath given you the unction of the Spirit, hath brought you forth into this wrestling ground etc." Now we should infer from this that the youth of amazing beauty is either Christ or the Holy Spirit: and thus we are able to justify the Greek text against the Latin, and to shew a ...

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(PREFACE: In the following pages I have tried to give an a...)
PREFACE: In the following pages I have tried to give an account of the most recent discovery in theological literature, the Gospel attributed to St. Peter, in such a form as to familiarise the mind of the non-technical reader with some of the results which are being arrived at by biblical scholars, and which ought to be as encouraging to our faith as they are stimulating to the understanding. The Gospel of Peter, even in the imperfect form in which it has come down to us, is the breaking of a new seal, the opening of a fresh door, to those who are engaged in the problems presented by Biblical and Patristic criticism.....Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

(Excerpt from Fragments of the Commentary of Ephrem Syrus ...)
Excerpt from Fragments of the Commentary of Ephrem Syrus Upon the Diatessaron The Commentary of Ephrem Syrus has, for various reasons, hardly met with the welcome and the elucidation which so famous a work deserves. Probably this is due, on the one side, to the fact that it was, until the present pages were written, extant only in Armenian, and the paucity of scholars who are acquainted with that language has reacted upon the subject, and caused a somewhat cold treatment of the book itself; but it is also due, in part, to the odium anti-theologicum which was provoked by the appearance of a work which was supposed, rightly or wrongly, to have an important bearing upon the history of the Canon; so that in some quarters there have been muttered rumours that the work was not rightly ascribed to the great Syrian father whose name it bears, while in other quarters of the critical world, especially those which lie most nearly adjacent to the city of Tubingen, it has been treated with a silence that must be, to the looker-on, who proverbially has the best view of the game, very significant. Now it is unfortunate that this should be the case; unfortunate, I mean, that so many persons (myself amongst the number) are ignorant of Armenian, and that some persons (amongst whom I sincerely hope not to be included) limit their interest in a great work by the boundary of their theological or anti-theological predilections; and it is the more to be regretted, because the interest of the work does not lie primarily either in the fact that it is in Armenian, or in its possible bearing upon the evolution of the second century Gospels. (The following letters consist of a correspondence carried...)
The following letters consist of a correspondence carried on by my wife and myself with a small circle of interested friends in England who followed our expedition to Armenia in the spring of the present year with every form of sympathy, spiritual, moral, and material. As often happens in such cases, the information which we were able to send concerning the condition of affairs in the interior of Asiatic Turkey was soon in demand by others than those for whom it was initially designed; and when the channels which we had marked for our little stream of testimony had once been overflowed, it was not easy to refuse the request of a leading London firm of publishers who wished to make our brook into a river (with appropriate banks of copyright). And so, though we had no intention in the first instance of allowing general publicity to these letters, we have in the end agreed that they may be reproduced. Excerpt from The Gospel of the Twelve Apostles: Together With the Apocalypses of Each One of Them The series of tracts contained in the following pages, from which a selection has already appeared in the Contemporary Review for December, 1899, may seem to some to be of too small importance to be honoured with a further publication; but the matter contained in them is new, the Syriac appears to be original rather than, as is so often the case, translated, and the historical situations, which can clearly be made out, have a value of their own in the record of the decline of Eastern Christianity. My especial thanks are due to Prof. Nestle of Maulbronn, whose acute criticisms and careful proof-reading have added much to the accuracy of the volume. (Mr Pepys tells us in his diary that he was waked one morn...)
Mr Pepys tells us in his diary that he was waked one morning between four and five by a blackbird which he had purchased, which whistled as well as ever he heard any ;only it was the beginning of many tunes very well, but there leaves them and goes no further. I am afraid that my writings on the text of the New Testament have the defect which Mr Pepys found in his blackbirds song; they do not beat their music out, and they always stop short before the problems stated are properly solved. The present volume is certainly a case in point, and my fear is that, through its incompleteness, it may irritate rather than please. But if life should happen to be prolonged (which is itself the preliminary piping of a bird of passage), I shall hope to return to the Ferrar problem again and perhaps, with the aid of my friend, Mr Lake, who is busy with the same researches, to finally edit and explain the archetypal text which underlies this curious group of manuscripts. Originally published in 1903, this book traces the influence of the ancient pagan legends of Castor and Pollux, the Dioscuri, on later Christian hagiography. Rendel Harris charts how the Church not only displaced ancient religious practices centred around the Dioscuri with their own traditions, but also how Christians took pagan legends and reshaped them for their own purposes. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in comparative religious history, the history of the early church and the influences of paganism on Christianity.

(Tryphaena and Tryphosa (R om. xvi. 12) in the New Testame...)
Tryphaena and Tryphosa (R om. xvi. 12) in the New Testament, for here either form is a feminine to the masculine Tpvjxov, according as the accent falls on the first or second syllable. Even where the equivalence of the names is not apparent to the eye nor sensible to the ear, it is often quite clear to the reflecting mind. For instance, the famous twins of the Serapeum at Memphis were known by the names of Taues and Taous, and there ought to have been no difficulty in recognizing them as twin-sisters, even if they were not persistently called ai Bi Svnai. But then the same things may be said of the young ladies who were ibis-wardens at Thebes ,although one of them was called Tathautis and the other Taeibis; for we can dissect out of their names when the feminine prefix is removed (a) the god Thoth, (b) the sacred ibis which is his outward and visible equivalent. A similar case in the Greek mythology is that of the two brethren Lynceus and I das who kill Castor and Pollux, or rather who kill Castor, for Pollux is one of the immortals. It has been suspected by scholars that the conflict in question relates to a struggle for supremacy between two independent local cults of the Great Twin-brethren; and certainly when we examine the names of the supposed Dioscuri of Messene, Lynceus and I das, we find the idea of sharp-sightedness, not only in the well-known Lynceus but also in his brother; and this encourages the belief that they are twins, though the names at first seem to be remote. Probably with a better knowledge of philology, we should be able to make the still desiderated nexus between the names of Castor and Pollux. So, without any reference to the Acta Sanctorum, we were able to infer that Florus and Lauius were twins. The next step in the investigation occurred when I was reading Tolstoi s Peace and War ,and stumbled on the following conversation betwee (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

A vas introduced in the lectures on theD ioscuri in tJ ie Christian Legends. The field has widened under survey, and is now comparable with all time and all existence. The man who deals with a universal subject needs something more than a universal spirit ;he must have a number of friends and know how to use them. In the following pages will be found the traces of more minds than one or two. Dr Moulton and Mr Chadwick have advised my philological weakness, and found me parallels to my investigations from the lore of the far north and the far east: Mr Johns has advised me as to the Assyrian and Babylonian beliefs that may be quoted ;M rB ass Mullinger supplies me with an interesting case of Dioscurophany from theM iddle A ges; Mr Conybeare suggests to me to examine the pretty story of Sisinnius andS isinnodorus ;M iss Jane Harrison points out some archeological parallels; and Mr T. R. Glover watches over the work with constant suggestion, wise rebuke and solicitude, as if it were his own. My hearty thanks to them and to others. IN our previous lecture we were discussing the situation which was created in the year 1881 by the issue of the Revised Version, and the publication of the New Greek Text of Westcott and Hort. We saw how hotly both the translation and the underlying text were assailed by Dr. Burgon, and how he held his ground against all comers, and serenely awaited the judgment of the " remnant of the days" ('Aepat 7rtol7tol). As it is nearly thirty years since that great battle was first joined, and we may, therefore, ourselves be fairly regarded as chronologically identified with the Court of Appeal, it will be interesting to examine what we think of the issue now. Suppose that those Quarterly Review articles had just appeared in October, 1908, instead of in October, 1881, could they 36 present the same confident demeanour as on their actual appearance? We will make an experiment and see what will happen. The first case that Dr. Burgon brings forward will be found on p. 5 of his Revision Revised and runs as follows: "Undeniable at all events it is, that the effect which these ever-recurring announcements of the existence of various readings produce on the devout reader of Scripture, is the reverse of edifying; is never helpful; is always bewildering. A man of ordinary acuteness can but exclaim--' Yes, very likely. But what of it?' My eye happens to alight on 'Bethesda' (in St. John v. 2): against which I find in the margin, Some ancient authorities read Bethsaida, others Bethzatha' Am I then to understand that in the judgment of the Revisionists it is uncertain which of those three names is right?... Obscurities are sure to exist in a text so scantily attested and of such an uncertain tradition. In spite, however, of these inherent difficulties, I hope that the translation and editing of these new Odes of Solomon (with their associated and already known Psalms of Solomon) will be satisfactory; for, although late in date, the text is very well preserved, and the translation from the Greek into the Syriac appears to have been carefully and conscientiously made. If we could come across some more traces of the newly-recovered work in the writings of the Fathers, or if, by good hap, we might find the lost Latin or a copy of the original Greek, much that is obscure in our presentation of the Odes would disappear. Meanwhile we have done our best with the material as we found it and as we were able to reinforce it: our thanks are due to scholarly friends who have assisted us with their keen revising eyes or their nimble emendating brains. My learned lady friends Mrs Lewis and Mrs Gibson have given me much assistance with the proofs: Mr Glover has criticised obscure passages and inadequate arguments; and Professor Nestle has made some brilliant suggestions for the betterment of the text, and traces of his skilled hand may be seen at several points, of which I note especially Ode 7. 12, Ode 38. 14, Ps. v. 16, Ps. vii. 4, and Ps. xvii. 31. I think it is very likely that a skilled Coptic scholar could also do something to improve either the text or the translation in those Odes which have been transferred to the text of the Pistis Sophia, RENDEL HARRIS Chetwynd Sellv Oak October 1909 o. s. Reviews: "While the Psalms of Solomon, dating from the middle of the first century B. C, have long been known, a Syriac version of them has been found whose MS. is accompanied by the MS. of the hitherto unknown collection here entitled 'The Odes of Solomon'—a document of higher antiquity than any other non-canonical Christian writing. . . . These Odes are regarded as produced amidst Jewish-Christian influences, but, at least in part, at a somewhat earlier date, and are justly pronounced 'a memorial of the first importance for rightly understanding the beliefs and experiences of the primitive church.' " —Outlook "The matter presented to us in this humble guise bids fair to stand forth as one of the greatest treasures of early Christian literature. 1n the case of a work destined to be so widely discussed and to play so important a role in the history of early Christian literature, one wonders what could have induced the experienced editor to omit all indices. The fine reserve, the carefully judicial, conservative spirit so characteristic of the best English scholarship of today, is not the least of the good qualities of this book." —M. Sprengling "Dr. Harris's introduction, like his notes on the separate Odes, throws a flood of light on the topics to which we have referred and many others. There is, however, likely to be much difference of opinion on not a few of his details." —Bible World "We may congratulate ourselves that this first English version of the Odes is the work of a scholar of so much literary feeling as Dr. Harris. He has nobly interpreted these beautiful works of religion. We only regret that the editor has given us no index of his work or the Odes. Patristic study in particular is indebted afresh to Dr. Harris for a new monument of the greatest antiquity and interest." —E. J. Goodspeed (Bible World) "I have endeavoured to do honour to the gifted editor even while criticising him. Able and instructive (even on folklore) as Dr. Harris's introduction is, it suffers through his not having recognized that the passages which are most plainly Christian are interpolations." —T. K. Cheyne "A notable addition has been made to our scanty collection of early Christian books." —Outlook

Ky tfnmbrfoge: IIIINTKI- li i. T. rl.AY, M.A. AND vi iifh I NI vi rsity rittn. THE TiEST OF THE WORDS OF BAIIUCTT. Thr present work is designed to draw attention to an important lmt hitherto much-nogleeted fragment of Apocalyptic literatiire which seems to me to he valuable, in spite nl I lie contemptuous treatment which it has met with at the hands of I he critics, both to the Ecclesiastical Historian and In the Christian Dogmatist; to the former, on account of the light which it throws on one of the most obscure periods in the growth of the Chinch, that, viz., which includes the revolt of the false Messiah ;to the latter, because it helps us to see the manner in which one of I he leading doctrines of the Christian Faith polarized the worshippers for and against itself (as almost every point of Christian doctrine does at some time or other in the history of the Church), and setting a man at variance spiritually with his fellow brought it to pass that the sword came down in the house itself to separate the undecided and half-hearted from the convinced and the faithful, that the many who were called might make way for the few who were chosen. Nor is this the only reason why it should he made an object of attentive studj. Wc hear much said now-a-days about the interpolation of Jewish Apocalypses by Christians, and it becomes a very interesting matter for critical study to determine how far such a tendency to the absorption and republication of earlier literary productions prevailed in those centuries which were especially marked by Apocalyptic activit (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

Frankenberg and Preuschen have made the suggestion that we should translate 'see yourselves in Him', on the supposition that a primitive Greek eavrous or avrou's has been misunderstood by the translator, who took the word to refer to the 'eyes' and not to the persons who were using the eyes. The point deserves a careful consideration; in Ode xv. 3 special importance is attached to eyes. v. 2. Gressmann unnecessarily changes o. 'to His Spirit' into Om.oj. 'to His Herrlichkeit'. v. 3. The MS. seems to have the meaningless JLT.. Its correction into %1. is almost certain. The root being-i, with a guttural hamza, phonetically it is more correct to read Jk-i., but it is a well-known fact that the sound hamza is frequently softened into a weak letter. Expository Notes. This little Ode, like the preceding one, is Sapiential in character: the 'mirror' which the Lord is declared to be, is the 'unspotted mirror of the operation of God' in the seventh chapter of the Wisdom of Solomon. We have shown in the introductory chapters how familiar Ephrem was with this Ode, and how he manipulated it into liturgical language. If we keep the Sapiential language before our mind, we shall see the meaning of the close of the Ode as well as its opening: the believer, who clothes himself with the Divine Holiness, becomes also a spotless person (d/cAi'San-os), and is enjoined to be ' without stain' at all time before Him. In the Acts of John there is a curious hymn sung by the Apostle to his disciples before his apprehension; at the close of the hymn, which seems to belong to Christ speaking in him, we read 'I am a Lamp to him that sees me: I am a Mirror to him that considers me: I am a Door to him that knocks to me: I am a Way to...

(Few Christians know that these books accredited to Solomo...)
Few Christians know that these books accredited to Solomon even exist. These two scholars uncover in great detail these Odes and Psalms. TGS Publishing Note: This is a facsimile book of an original printing. TGS invested in software and equipment in late 2008 that really increased the quality and speed to create facsimile books. This investment helps overcome many problems of reproducing many older books, such as yellowed pages, stains, see-thru or onion skin type paper, colored paper, brown inks, etc. These are scanned pages, not 'copied' pages, and the quality of print truly represents the quality of the print of the original book, though we may have been able to enhance or darken the print. We are proud to be able to preserve this work through new technology.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
