Dowdell, James Render was born on April 2, 1847 in near Lafayette, Alabama, United States. Son of James F. and Sarah H. (Render) Dowdell.

Education

Cadet in C.S.A., 1864-1865. Student of University Alabama, 1864-1865. Bachelor of Arts, College at Auburn, Alabama, 1867, A.M., 1869.

Career

2d, Ella M. Ware, December 12, 1878. Admitted to bar, 1870, engaged in practice at Lafayette. Solicitor 9th Judicial Circuit, 1876-1880.

Judge 5th Judicial Circuit, 1888-1892. Chancellor N. Eastern div., 1896-1898. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Alabama, since 1898, now chief justice.
