James Richards Carnahan, American lawyer.


Carnahan, James Richards was born on November 18, 1840 in Tippecanoe, Indiana, United States. Son of Review James Aikman and Martha A. Carnahan.


Educated Wabash College.


1861 and enlisted as private 11th infantry. Mustered out, 1865, with rank of captain. Returned to Wabash College at close of war and was graduate June 1866.

Graduate Indiana Law School, 1867. Commander department of Indiana, G.A.R., 2 terms, 1882-1883. Adjunct-general Indiana, brigadier general commanding Indiana National Guard, 1881-1885.

Elected major general Uniform Rank, Knights of Pythias, May 1, 1884, and continuously thereafter. Was United States Commissioner for Indiana for Cotton Centennial Exposition, New Orleans, 1884-1885. Commissioner for Indiana, Chickamauga National Military Park, since 1894.

President of the board of trustees Indiana State Soldiers’ Home, since 1895. Address: Indianapolis, Ind.
