Member Kentucky House of Representatives, 1828-1831, 37-38, 39-40, member commission on internal improvements, arranged for return of fugitive slaves. Delegate from Kentucky to National Republican Convention which nominated Henry Clay, Baltimore, 1831.

Governor Kentucky, 1834-1836. Favored judicial reform and popular education, denounced abolitionists.
Ex officio 1st president permanent Kentucky Board of Internal Improvements, then acting president, 1836-1837. Member United States Senate (Whig) from Kentucky, February 20, 1841-1847, supported Henry Clay and National Bank Bill, opposed annexation of Texas, but voted to declare war against Mexico.
