      Chairman Democratic Company Convention 1878, and its unanimous nominee for Constitutional Convention. Nominated for attorney general California, 1879, but declined. Judge Superior Court of San Francisco, since 1882, term expired 1918 (presiding judge, 1887, 1907).

      Democratic nominee for justice Supreme Court, 1890, and led ticket several thousand votes. Voted for in California Legislature, 1899, as Democratic choice for United States senator. Declined nomination for Congress 4th California District, 1900.
