Elliott studied at Bedford School, and was vice captain of the 1st XV for the 2009 season.
He was traded to Collingwood at the end of 2011 in a deal with Greater Western Sydney, which also saw Marty Clarke return to the club, in exchange for a first round draft pick. Elliott made his debut in Round 9, 2012, against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium. Elliott lived in Dongara, Western Australia before his family moved to Queensland.
His father died when he was a teenager and his family moved to Euroa, Victoria where he played for the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup. In 2011 he was invited to play two games for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
He made it back-to-back scores a week later against London Irish and carried his scoring form into England U20's Six Nations winning campaign, crossing in the opening win against Wales. Injury disrupted the remainder of Elliott's season but he returned by scoring a two tries as the Saints beat Saracens in his first appearance of the 2011/12 season and repeating the trick for the Saints' Heineken Cup visit to Castres in December. He finished the 2012/13 season as the Saint's leading try scorer after 5 tries in 2 games against Bath Rugby and Sale Sharks helped him achieve a total of 10 for the season.
