Background

Robinson, Jane Marie Bancroft was born on December 24, 1847 in W. Stockbridge, Massachusetts, United States. Daughter of Review George C. and Caroline M. (Orton) Bancroft.

Education

Graduate Emma Willard School, Troy, New York, 1871, and New York State Normal School (now State College), Albany, 1872. Bachelor of Philosophy, Syracuse University, 1877, the Master of Philisophy, 1880, Doctor of Philosophy. First woman to receive Doctor of Laws degree from Syracuse University, 1918.

First fellow in history Bryn Mawr College, 1886. Graduate study University of Zurich, 1886-1887, University of Paris and École des Hautes Études, Paris, 1887-1888. Doctor of Laws from University of Southern California, 1929.

Career

Dean of Woman’s College and professor French language and literature, Northwestern University, 1878-1885. Founder of deaconess work of Woman’s Home Missionary Society, 1888. Opened meetings, 1890, at Washington, District of Columbia, which led to establishment of Lucy Webb Hayes National Training school and Sibley Hospital.

Assisted at opening Training School, Kansas City, Missoury, 1889. Founder nat. tr. schools, Washington, 1888, San Francisco, 1890. Founder, 1883, Western Association Collegiate Alumnae (now American Association University Women).

Founder Robincroft Rest Home for Deaconesses and Women Missionaries, and Robinson Park, for retired ministers, both in Pasadena, California, 1923. Also the Library Assembly Building, 1931, in Robinson Court, Pasadena, for use of students and scholars. Institute associate California Institute Technology, Pasadena.
