Janet Álvarez-Gonzalez was born on February 7, 1965, in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. She developed a multifaceted career spanning journalism, literature, education, marketing, visual arts, and military public affairs.
Early in her media career, she worked in Richmond, Virginia, as a producer and journalist for El Eco de Virginia, PBS, and Jay Sears News Services. In February 2001, she was commissioned as a Captain and Public Affairs Officer in the Puerto Rico State Guard Command. After one year, she was assigned to the Readiness and Mobilization Advisory Group serving the General of the Puerto Rico State Guard.
Approximately two years later, she was appointed by the Governor of Texas as a Public Affairs Officer with the rank of Major in the Texas State Guard at the headquarters of the Texas Military Forces in Austin.
In 2010, she participated in Operation Lone Star as a Public Affairs Officer supporting joint Texas Military Forces operations.
She has also served as an international correspondent for La Voz Hispana de New York.
