This volume examines the interactions between white missionaries and slaves in the 1840s and 1850s, and the ways in which blacks used the missions to nurture the formation of the organized black church. The author uses church records, slave narratives, and autobiographies in her research.

The authors (retired professors of history and the humanities from Danville Area Community College) provide a portrait of the emergence of the women of Danville, Illinois into the public sphere during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In separate chapters they examine the engagement of Danville's women with the public life of their churches; the Clover Club, a literary study circle; the exclusively women managers of the Vermilion County Children's Home; the establishment and activities of the Danville Woman's Club; the public world of working women and their relationship to club women; the Travelers Aid Society and the Yong Women's Christian Association; and Danville's temperance movement.

Cornelius was born on January 20, 1938 in Penfield, Illinois, United States; the daughter of Heye John and Mary Ellen (Michael) Duitsman.
Cornelius attended Ogden High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968, a Master of Arts degree in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1977 from the University of Illinois.
Cornelius was an instructor and administrator at Danville Area Community College from 1986 to 1991, where she was named Faculty of the Year in 1996. She also taught at the University of Illinois, Eastern Illinois University, where she was a professor of history, and at the University of St. Francis. Janet was a visiting assistant professor of the University of Illinois in 1977-1978.

1999Cornelius served on the Illinois Archives Board and the board of the Illinois Historical Society. Also she was a president of the Danville branch of the American Association of University Women. Janet was a member of St. John Lutheran Church at Royal where she served on the church council and the synod's Global Mission Committee as world hunger coordinator.
Cornelius with her husband explored three continents and 23 countries. She traveled with friends to another six countries. Her travels reinforced her deeply held convictions of equality and dignity for women and of tolerance and kindness toward everyone, regardless of background.
She was an avid reader, constantly sharing books with her book group as well as with her children and grandchildren. She also loved music, becoming a regular patron of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts as well as the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Janet also sang for many in the Oratorio Society at the University of Illinois. She often traveled to Canada for its annual Shakespeare festival and promoted the arts wherever she could.
On June 10, 1956 Janet Cornelius married Eldred Jansen Cornelius. They have 2 daughters, 2 sons, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
