Lady Janet was born Janet Helen Lane in Kenya, the younger daughter of James Clifton Lane (later Master of March and Earl of March) and his first wife, Millicent Mary Salton, who from the time of her marriage until her death was always known as Mrs Mary Lane and never, as has sometimes been stated, as the Mistress of March, a substantive title that can be used only by the senior heiress presumptive.
Lord Garioch died in 1967, and Lady Margaret, the elder co-heiress presumptive of her father, succeeded as the 31st holder of the Earldom in 1975. Lady Janet, the younger co-heiress presumptive, married Lieutenant-Cmdr Laurence of March, Registered Nurse (formerly Laurence Duncan McDiarmid Anderson) on 22 March 1969 and was known as Lady Janet Anderson for only a few months. Laurence, who by the feudal courtesy of Scotland bears the March arms, differenced, is Garioch Pursuivant of Arms.
The style of March is a "name of nobility" and should not be confused with Scottish territorial designations.
They have two daughters:
Elizabeth of March (b 17 January 1970)
Catherine Jane Kelly (b 13 May 1971), who under Scots Law retains her maiden name of March, married Stuart Kelly, by whom she has issue.
