Shamlian graduated from Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois, and received her college degree, a bachelor"s in journalism, from the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri Columbia.

She is a contributor to the prime-time news magazine Dateline National Broadcasting Company and to the business network Consumer News and Business Channel.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, she was raised in Park Ridge, Illinois, a Chicago suburb best known as the home town of Hillary Clinton. Shamlian began her career at Wood-television in Grand Rapids, Michigan, before joining Columbia Broadcasting System station KHOU-television in Houston. She returned to Chicago as a reporter for WBBM-TV-television She left WBBM-TV to return to Texas and start a family.
She subsequently had three more children, all five born within 7 years.
In 2005, Shamlian returned to television as a freelance correspondent for National Broadcasting Company News. In 2006 she was named a full-time correspondent, first assigned to Chicago and later to Texas.
In 2007, Shamlian conducted the first evening network broadcast interview with Michelle Obama, the wife of then presidential candidate Barack Obama, on the National Broadcasting Company Nightly News. In addition, she has covered a variety of national and international stories for National Broadcasting Company, including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, Hurricane Katrina, and the 7 July 2005 London bombings.
In 2015, Shamlian interviewed the cast of the Gilmore Girls at the Austin Television Festival for the TODAY show.
