Sylvester received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Goddard College, in 1975 and 1978 respectively. In 1991 she earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Utah.
Sylvester began her career as a member of English department of the University of South Carolina at Columbia. Now she is an associate director of the low-residency undergraduate program at Goddard College in Vermont. Sylvester also works as a teacher of creative and expository writing at Harvard University, Old Dominion University, Ohio University and others.
Sylvester is the author of books of poetry That Mulberry Wine, A Visitor at the Gate and The Mark of Flesh. Her works have been represented in anthologies, including The Sacred Place and Real Things: An Anthology of Popular Culture in American Poetry. She is a contributor of poems to magazines, including Weber Studies, Southwest Review, Shenandoah, Great Stream Review, Seneca Review, Cimarron Review, Prairie Schooner and Virginia Quarterly Review.
