(Selecting literature to convey the essence of the Holocau...)
Selecting literature to convey the essence of the Holocaust is difficult because there was no standard Holocaust experience. Each person who experienced the Holocaust - whether victim, witness, resuer, or descendant - has a unique story to tell. Selections for this anthology include fiction (both short stories and excepts from novels), poetry, historical accounts, biographical sketches, and drama. Each entry is preceded by a brief biographical note about the author and an introduction. In addition, each chapter opens with material that provides historical context for the selections that follow.

(This book, written for librarians, teachers, and others w...)
This book, written for librarians, teachers, and others who work with children and young adults, can be used as a selection tool for materials about the Holocaust. The authors, university professors, have compiled annotated bibliographies of nonfiction, photo essays, personal narratives, biography and autobiography, historical fiction, plays, and contemporary fiction about the Holocaust. Books that fall under these genres are arranged by grade levels: primary, elementary, junior high/middle school, and secondary. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction about the types of literature it contains, suggested things for students to think about prior to reading, and an unannotated list of titles with grade-level indications. Each full entry includes bibliographic citation, quotes from the text, summary of the content, and suggestions for teaching the book. After these entries is a list of works described elsewhere in the book and another further reading list that has short annotations. These chapters conclude with discussion questions to be used after reading. Chapter 7 contains organizations to contact for useful information, films and videos, and educational resources for teachers. This chapter is made valuable by the inclusion of addresses and telephone numbers. The volume concludes with an index of authors and an index of titles by chapter. The authors have included in the main bibliography most titles representative of the large body of work of Holocaust literature. A notable exception is The Diary of a Young Girl, which is included in play form, but the original version appears only in a list of further reading. Anne Frank is represented by many titles about her by other authors. This volume will be a valuable selection source, collection-development tool, and teaching aid for educators and librarians for all grade levels.
