(One of this country's most acclaimed novelists returns to...)
One of this country's most acclaimed novelists returns to late nineteenth and early twentieth century America as the setting for her most personal novel: the parallel stories of a woman and a country and the loss of innocence. From a life of servitude in a small Pennsylvania town, Ellen Watson is catapulted into a life she was never prepared to live a life she never quite believes herself worthy of. As the bride of Jeremy Porter, scion of a wealthy eastern family, she enters into a world of politics, wealth, and power, a world where hypocrisy and ruthlessness reign. And against the background of a crumbling American Dream, as a nation comes fully of age and faces the First World War, Ellen loses the one man who can protect her ... and a country loses the man who perhaps could have saved it from the raw and brutal ambition of the sons of Cain.

The Balance Wheel has all the strengths and all the weaknesses of the page-turner, pot-boiler novel: decent people caught in the cross purposes of turbulent times; far too many instances of "simple belief" and instictive or intuitive understanding; a passionate statement about the waste and futility of war and an ending that is only ironic when fully comprehended

(Editorial Review - Kirkus Reviews Like Romeo and Juliet, ...)
Editorial Review - Kirkus Reviews Like Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, there was Pericles and Aspasia and with a ""dulcitude of nightingales"" along with her usual implementation of period detail, Miss Caldwell tells their story in three parts: Aspasia's from the time when even as a child she had ""myriad eyes, all developed"" as was the rest of her to become a hetaira and one of the reluctant harem wives of the Persian Al Taliph against whom she rebels for her sex (dulcitudinous reverberations of early Women's Lib); and of Pericles, the confident, progressive, expansionist political leader -- ""a formidable man"" the ""least impetuous"" until he meets Aspasia and for him it's ""rapture and ecstasy and beguilements"" and for her ""transports"" even just as she is bearing his son. Less enthralled however with this relationship were the Athenians and Pericles comes under greater and greater attack, he is accused of poisoning his best friend, and lo and verily behold dies ""of grief"" in Aspasia's arms. . . . For all those ""mere mortals"" -- many, many, many.

"There can be help. There's always God," said Amy. "I'm ashamed. I'd forgotten about Him." She was quiet for a time. When she lifted her head she looked older and resolute. "Don't blame yourself too much, Cousin Caroline," she said. "That's as bad as taking no blame at all. I'm not going to blame everything on Ames; I was a little fool myself. I was old enough to know that things aren't simple." - A Prologue to Love Taylor Caldwell was born in Manchester, England, into a family of Scottish background. Her family descended from the Scottish clan of MacGregor of which the Taylors are a subsidiary clan. In 1907 she emigrated to the United States with her parents and younger brother. Her father died shortly after the move, and the family struggled. In 1918-1919, she served in the United States Navy Reserve. In 1919 she married William F. Combs. In 1920, they had a daughter, Mary (known as "Peggy"). From 1923 to 1924 she was a court reporter in New York State Department of Labor in Buffalo, New York. In 1924, she went to work for the United States Department of Justice, as a member of the Board of Special Inquiry (an immigration tribunal) in Buffalo. In 1931 she graduated from the University of Buffalo, and also was divorced from William Combs. Caldwell then married her second husband, Marcus Reback, a fellow Justice employee. She had a second child with Reback, a daughter Judith, in 1932. They were married for 40 years, until his death in 1971.

"I have discovered that men are always fascinated by the thought of Lucifer, perhaps because evil is always more dramatic than Good , more spectacular, more bloody, and more frightful, and when men are not comedians - though they never seem aware of the comedy of their being - they are, at heart, dramatists and tragedians. Yet, strangely, the tragedy of the Sacrifice on the Cross does not touch them greatly, and therein is another mystery.".....Taylor Caldwell.

(Guy Jerald was living proof of the American Dream come tr...)
Guy Jerald was living proof of the American Dream come true- a man who had built an empire out of a worthless scrap of farmland, a man who had risen from the wrong side of the tracks to move gracefully within the inner circles of the very rich. In her new novel, one of America's most renowned writers turns her skillful eye onto the contemporary scene in a story about power and the struggle for power, about the treachery of dreams and the tyranny of duty, about a man who gains the whole world, but loses his own soul- almost. For at the prime of his life, Guy Jerald tries to kill himself. Now confined to luxurious sanitarium, though clearly not insane, Guy refuses to speak to anyone- even his wife and family. It is an old friend, English psychiatrist James Meyer, who is finally able to break through Guy's suffering and help him face the choice which has threatened his existence. A choice between the self he has created and the self he is running from, between a psychologically binding marriage and the woman he truly loves. As he attempts to uncover the source of his friend's agony, James is forced to come to terms with his own unfulfilled hopes and meet the greatest challenge of his life.

(The world-famous novel about the triumphant story of St. ...)
The world-famous novel about the triumphant story of St. Luke. Man of science, and Gospel writer. Today St. Luke is known as the author of the third Gospel of the New Testament, but two thousand years ago he was Lucanus, a Greek, a man who loved, knew the emptiness of bereavement, and later traveled through the hills and wastes of Judea asking, "What manner of man was my Lord?" And it is of this Lucanus that Taylor Caldwell tells here in one of the most stirring stories ever lived or written. Lucanus grew up in the household of his stepfather, the Roman govenor of Antioch. After studying medicine in Alexandria he became one of the greatest physicians of the ancient world and traveled far and wide through the Mediterranean region healing the sick. As time went on he learned of the life and death of Christ and saw in Him the God he was seeking. To find out all he could about the life and teachings of Jesus, whom he never saw, Lucanus visited all the places where Jesus had been, questioning everyone--including His mother, Mary--who had known Him or heard Him preach. At last, when he had gathered all information possible, he wrote down what we now know as the Gospel according to St. Luke. Taylor Caldwell has chosen the grand, the splendid means to tell of St. Luke. Her own travels through the Holy Land and years of meticulous research made Dear and Glorious Physician a fully developed portrait of a complex and brilliant man and a colorful re-creation of ancient Roman life as it contrasted in its decadence with the new world Christianity was bringing into being. Here is a story to warm, to inspire, to call forth renewal of faith and love lying deep in each reader's heart.

( An embattled young doctor, an angry and divided Pennsyl...)
An embattled young doctor, an angry and divided Pennsylvania town, a turn-of-the-century national scandal--out of these turbulent elements Taylor Caldwell crafted a major novel, a massively detailed chronicle of love, death, redemption, and the rise of modern medicine. First published in 1968, it spent ten months on the New York Times bestseller list and was made into a highly praised and fondly remembered 1977 miniseries. Testimony of Two Men tells the story of Jonathan Ferrier, a brilliant physician hounded by his tragic past and threatened present. The capricious healer of Hambledon, Dr. Ferrier remains an enigma to all. Even a sympathetic young outsider--Dr. Robert Morgan, fresh from Johns Hopkins--is hard pressed to separate the facts from the lies. But everyone knows that Ferrier’s wife--a girlish and near-legendary beauty named Mavis--died in grisly circumstances. In unraveling Ferrier’s terrible secret, Caldwell brings into play an astonishing range of characters: the lusty, laughing, almost demoniac Mavis, whose memory haunts her husband; Dr. Ferrier’s gentle and indomitable mother, the grande dame of Hambledon; likeable but corrupt brother Harald and silent and brooding niece” Jenny; and the powerful politicians who plot to destroy the despised doctor. To these men and women, Taylor Caldwell brings compassionate yet cynical observations that culminate in her most accomplished and memorable work of fiction.
