Education
Drnovšek graduated from the University of Ljubljana with a degree in economics (1973);
he continued studying in the USA and got his doctor’s degree in economics at the University of Maribor.
Drnovšek speaks English, French, Spanish and German fluently.
Career
Up to 1989 the future president worked at a construction firm (branch of Ljubljana Bank), held the position of the trade and economic advisor in Yugoslavia embassy in Egypt.
In April 1989 Drnovšek was elected to the government of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) as a representative of Slovenia.
He was the head of the government since 1989 to 1990 at the same being the commander of the Yugoslav People's Army.
After the international recognition of Slovenia as an independent country and holding the first elections Drnovšek was elected the Prime Minister twice (1992 and 1997) and in 2002 he won the presidential elections.
Politics
During his chairmanship Janez Drnovšek stood for economic and market reformation, for democracy, protection of human rights and Yugoslavia’s entering the European Union. He had a success, but he wasn’t supported by the majority of leaders of of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY).
Janez Drnovšek contributed a lot to the development of Slovenia. Due to his activity Slovenia became independent, got international recognition and turned into one of the most economically developed countries of not only former Yugoslavia but also of the former socialist sector.
The president considers close relations with neighbor countries to be the mail issues of the foreign policy.
You may say that Slovenia has already found its place in the international community and on the European continent.
As for the home policy Janez Drnovšek emphasizes protection of human rights and freedoms, developing of the market economy.
