(This revisionist study of the novels of Paul Scott breaks...)
This revisionist study of the novels of Paul Scott breaks new ground in literary and postcolonial discourse. Using previously unpublished archival materials and contemporary place theory as fulcrums to examine Scott’s narrative method, Janis E. Haswell examines what she calls Scott’s narrative of relationality – his mastery of multiple perspective and juxtaposition of images, characters, sites, and events. This book shows how the theme of connection valorizes the singular self and the cohesive power of life-narratives in the Raj Quartet and earlier works. Scott’s philosophy of place(s) relates both to England’s imperial past and, more broadly, to contemporary views of self and identity.

(The Haswells have created a Big Idea book, and a critique...)
The Haswells have created a Big Idea book, and a critique of the field. Their point is clear: the singular person/mysterious black box/author merits deeper consideration than we have given it, and the book’s crafted and woven explorations provide the intellectual tools to move beyond both political divisions and theoretical impasses.

(Hospitality and Authoring, a sequel to the Haswells’ 2010...)
Hospitality and Authoring, a sequel to the Haswells’ 2010 volume Authoring, attempts to open the path for hospitality practice in the classroom, making a strong argument for educational use and offering an initial map of the territory for teachers and authors. Hospitality and Authoring strives to offer a few possibilities of change to help make college an institution where singular students and singular teachers create a room to learn with room to learn.
